At the start of 2020, I launched a campaign to Raise the Rate of Newstart (now JobSeeker). The response I received was strong and unanimous – the old Newstart payment of approximately $40 a day is not good enough. You can watch one of the speeches I gave in Parliament fighting to raise the rate here.
Since then, the Federal Government introduced a Coronavirus Supplement of $550 a fortnight. This supplement has been a lifeline for so many Australians who have lost their job or had their hours cut because of COVID.
At the end of September, the Coronavirus Supplement was cut from $550 to $250.
On 31 December 2020, the JobSeeker payment is scheduled to return to its old base rate of approximately $40 a day.
A snapback of JobSeeker will place almost 2 million Australians at risk of poverty and will threaten our economic recovery before it has even begun.
The Federal Government should never disadvantage people who find themselves without work – especially during an economic recession.
We are calling on the Federal Government to permanently increase the JobSeeker payment to relieve vulnerable people from poverty, help people find jobs and stimulate the economy.
