FEDERAL MEMBER FOR LILLEY
ALBANESE LABOR GOVERNMENT WILL FUND $5 MILLION UPGRADE
TO BRIGHTON FORESHORE
An Albanese Labor Government will invest $5 million to deliver the long-awaited upgrade to the Brighton Foreshore, in the electorate of Lilley.
Shadow Minister for Infrastructure Catherine King said the project was delayed by Brisbane City Council after the 2011 floods but had not been reinstated despite multiple appeals and petitions by Federal Member for Lilley Anika Wells and Deagon Ward Councillor Jared Cassidy.
“An elected Albanese Labor Government will work with all levels of government to make the Brighton Foreshore Upgrade a reality,” Ms King said.
Ms Wells said she had made two consecutive bids to the Morrison Government for funding in the 2020/21 and 2021/22 Lilley Budget submissions.
“After years of broken promises from Adrian Schrinner and the Brisbane City Council, this upgrade is long overdue,” Ms Wells said.
“The foreshore is one of Lilley’s most beautiful natural attractions, and an essential element of recreation for Northsiders on the weekends, particularly for those in Brighton and Sandgate.”
Councillor Cassidy said the foreshore is a popular stretch that attracts thousands of residents and tourists.
Sections of the footpath are narrow, dangerous, and breaking apart,” Cr Cassidy said.
“On the weekend, you will struggle to find seating and picnic facilities, and there are no toilets between Sandgate Pool and Decker Park.”
Ms Wells said it was important that the views of Brighton residents be heard to make sure the upgrade reflects what the community needs.
“We want to make sure the people of Brighton have their say on the upgrade, so we’ll work to make sure local residents are consulted as soon as possible if an Albanese Labor Government is elected,” she said.
