Getting Gympie Road moving again
An Albanese Labor Government will get Gympie Road moving again, starting with a $5 million planning study to remove blockages and ease congestion along this vital arterial.
Significant investment into surrounding roads – including the Gateway Motorway – has delivered easier travel to many Queenslanders but left considerable blockages closer to the city, particularly along Gympie Road.
So bad is congestion that RACQ has identified Gympie Road as the fifth most congested in the state.
A $5 million study will do the hard work of identifying what can be done to ease congestion, as well as laying the groundwork for future works to be carried out in cooperation with the Queensland Government.
Member for Lilley Anika Wells said since 2015, Gympie Rd Chermside has been identified by RACQ and the AAMI Crash Index as the most dangerous, and one of the most congested roads in Queensland.
‘The intersection of Gympie Rd and Hamilton Rd is also the location of’ Westfield Chermside, the second largest shopping centre in Australia,’ Ms Wells said.
‘It has 15.5 million customer visits per annum.
‘Over 100,000 cars travel Gympie Rd each day, with numbers set to skyrocket over the next 20 years by 40-60 per cent.
‘That’s why I launched a petition last year to seek funding to identify projects and solutions to address this significant transport safety issue.’
The Shadow Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development, Catherine King said this was exactly the kind of infrastructure an Albanese Labor Government would build across Australia, getting locals home sooner and safer.
‘An Albanese Labor Government will do the job once and do it right,’ she said.
‘Thank you to Anika Wells for her ongoing advocacy for important projects just like this one.’
When complete, this upgrade will mean that working families across Brisbane’s north can enjoy a better life with less time on the road and more time at home.
While the Morrison-Joyce Government prefers to rort urban congestion funding into marginal seats and commuter carparks in Melbourne, only an Albanese Labor Government can be trusted to invest in the right projects for Brisbane.
